The word “Installation” has been a significant part of my week, primarily because we’re looking
forward to my formal installation as pastor of Redemption this coming Sunday. In a different
vein, the other day, Jennifer and I had a contractor at our home to give us a quote for the
installation of replacement windows.
Strange (perhaps “nerdy” would be more accurate) as it sounds, our window appointment has
had me thinking about the significance of our use of the word “installation” for what happens
when a pastor officially takes a post at a new congregation.
When a new window is installed, if done properly, it becomes a seamless component of a larger
whole, essential to the completeness of the home. Yet the window itself is not there to be
admired in itself, but simply so that light and a and a view from beyond itself can enter through
it. I’m sure you get where this is going.
As I am installed this Sunday, the congregation at Redemption and I will both be asked to
embrace certain vows to one another and to God from our denomination’s Book of Church
Order. The vow of mine that stands out to me the most is this:
"Do you engage to be faithful and diligent in the exercise of all your duties as a Christian
and a minister of the Gospel, whether personal or relational, private or public; and to
endeavor by the grace of God to adorn the profession of the Gospel in your manner of
life, and to walk with exemplary piety before the flock of which God shall make you
All of this is a roundabout way of inviting you to linger for a moment over the words above and
to pray, both for me in particular, but also all of your other pastors and elders, that by God’s
grace, we would live up to this high calling to which we have said yes. We want to be well-fitting
components of the larger church, so that our influence as leaders allows rather than obscures
the light of Christ from shining on those around us. Would you pray for us?
